Metal Gear Solid 4 - Gameplay

Finally some gameplay footage of the much anticipated finale to the Metal Gear Solid series. Narrated by the revered Hideo Kojima, we get to see just what is involved when Solid Snake infiltrates a warzone.

As I pick my socks up, I will say there are things I noticed that didn’t seem right. There are a few points in the game that I would think highly trained military personnel would notice something wasn’t right. I imagine that the demo wasn’t played in a very difficult mode, as you wouldn’t expect the person demonstrating everything to have the game down to a science. The lack of a limited inventory could annoy me if I wasn’t such a huge fan of the series. Pulling a rocket launcher out of your back pocket never felt so right. So, is this enough for you to count Sony in the game?

What is your favorite classic arcade game?

Donkey Kong Jr Arcade Cabinet

I love my Donkey Kong Jr arcade cabinet. I grew up in an arcade… literally… my mom worked there so I spent my entire day with a sock full of tokens playing video games ’till it was time to go home. My fondest memories were built around the Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr arcade cabinets. I was known as “The Donkey Kong King”.

I have always been on the lookout for a DK or DK Jr cabinet when I finally found one. Near perfect condition and the price was right. I snatched it up and have been playing it ever since. I intend to do a complete restore on the cabinet, catching it all on tape for the site.

I am still on the lookout for a Donkey Kong cabinet, but I will probably hold off on that purchase until I have the DK Jr cabinet totally restored. However, if anyone knows where I can pick one up for cheap, I would appreciate a comment. :)

Anyway, I have told my story and now I would like to hear yours. What is your favorite arcade game? Leave me a comment about some fond memories and cast your vote on my poll below. Unfortunately, I cannot list all the arcade games of the 80’s, so please leave a comment if your fav is not on the list. Cannot wait to hear from you!

Which arcade classic do you prefer?

Games On Your Mobile Phone

orcsandelves.jpg

Something that’s been nagging at me lately is the number of games being developed for mobile phones. I have a PDA phone, and I do have a number of games on it, but nothing more ambitious than Tetris. I consider my phone to be a gaming platform on par with my watch. Staring into a tiny screen and mashing buttons makes my thumbs and/or fingers hurt and isn’t very easy on the eyes. Can fully developed mobile phone games really be that great?

The aforementioned Tetris and other simple games like Bejeweled aside, I wouldn’t expect companies like id to look at the phone as a serious gaming device, but Orcs & Elves is met with high regard by players everywhere. Games built specifically for the mobile phone is something I just didn’t expect.

Since the phone market started picking up speed, several popular titles like Prince of Persia and Might and Magic have been ported to the platform, and with much success. This brings me to God of War: Betrayal. God of War introduced some of the greatest visuals the Playstation 2 has ever known, and made full use of the multi-buttoned controller. Obviously, cell phones have many buttons too, but the PS2 controller was designed for games; cell phones are designed for calling people. So how do they plan on bringing this intense, beautiful action to a phone? Are people really looking forward to this game? Or has the mobile market become victim to cheap, excessive production?

Got something smart to say?

Then put it on a shirt and sell it. Cafepress allows the average joe to begin marketing their products, whether its a T-shirt, book, CD, even software, on the internet without the hassle of running a site.

cafepress1small.jpg

This process begins with setting up an account. You are asked a series of questions regarding what you want to do with your online shop. You will then be asked if you would like to setup a Premium shop (more features, but is $59.95 to start, recommended for the serious seller) or the Basic shop (FREE!)

cafepress2small.jpg

Now you have the opportunity to name your store, as well as link a website if you have one already. Just a few more configuration options and…

cafepress3small.jpg

Voila! You have an online shop! They even provide commission for products sold.

Check it out here.

Here’s a quick way to build links to your site - UPDATED!

John Cow Dot Com has a brilliant way of raising the stats of your site. He has started a link train. I think this is a brilliant idea for people just starting out or sites looking to increase their page rank.

I’ll admit, I did not find out about this directly. A friend over at UglyMailbox added me to her list and I found it in my link-back report. If you have a chance, check out UglyMailbox for some pictures of… ugly mailboxes (what else).

#Start copy here#

The idea is simple: You want readers and you want link backs too because that’s all us bloggers want, it’s more precious than milk for some. So how does it work? Simple! You just copy the list down below on your blog, hence creating link backs for your blogging friends and then click the RSS feed link to subscribe to all of them. Then you add yourself and up to 5 other bloggers and their feeds to the end of the list before you publish it on your own blog. Show your friends some link loveJust imagine if just 10 people would do this and then 10 more after them. That would get your blog 100 extra link backs and 100 extra feed subscribers!

E3 at its worst

Without the obscene amount of money dumped into it, booth babes, and public access, E3 really isn’t what it used to be. To cap it all off, we have some very disappointing press conferences by one of the godfathers of video games, Nintendo. Gametrailers pulled together the worst moments from E3 and crowned a single despot:

While I agree that Sony really pulled a number on us, they at least have some high quality material on the horizon. Nintendo’s presentation just didn’t feel like an E3 presentation. The Wii fit looks absolutely rediculous, and will probably be relegated to the same area of the house everyone’s old DDR mats are sitting. If this is the last E3, it sure went out quietly, hanging its head in shame.

Make money online with Moola games

Moola Tower
Moola logo

In a previous post, I pointed out a gaming-for-money service called GSpotGaming.com. As it turns out, this site is nothing more than a gambling site (which is illegal in some states). In my ever-continuing search for easy money online, I found Moola.com

The concept is simple enough: You start out with a penny and play games to double that penny. You can do things to add “boosters” (or extra cash) to your current amount. Some of these boosters include signing up on affiliate sites, buying stuff through the Moola shopping channels, or spinning the Moola wheel that appears randomly after using their on-site search engine (provided by Snap.com).

However, there is a risk. You have to put your money that you earned up for the bet. If you lose, you lose your money. I don’t know why this is not considered gambling but the GSpotGaming site was. But really, you did not pay anything to start playing. You are not required to give your credit card. Plus, the games are pretty fun. I hope to see more games as the site develops, but I am happy with my Gold Rush for now! ;)

I like 2D fighters

Most people look at popular games like Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat when they remember what got them into playing 2D fighting games. Well, I’m old school. I loved 2D fighters since I first played Yie Ar Kung Fu on an arcade machine at our local movie theater. The delightful challenge of playing Oolong against a variety of deadly foes parted me with many a quarter, and will now part another $5.00.

YIE AR KUNG FU HAS COME TO XBOX LIVE ARCADE!!!

yiearkungfuold.jpgyiearkungfunew.jpg

While I am a huge fan of the more complex fighters (Street Fighter III: Third Strike anyone?), the simplistic controls and damage system of Yie Ar Kung Fu have their own intricacies. When do you jump with a punch, when do you do the patented <-+Kick move. All of this adds up to a fully challenging and addictive experience. Not only does this game provide the classic arcade play, it also includes multiplayer modes and Co-op! A must have for any fan of the 2D fighting genre.

Sarcasm + Games + Comedy = Internet Goodness!

188512562146952799d4723.png

I recently stumbled across a juicy slice of internet goodness called SarcasticGamer.Com. These guys have made their claim to fame by poking fun at games, game companies, and technology in general. Their video and audio parodies of the Wii, PS3, and Mircosoft Surface have approached 2 Million views on YouTube, and rightfully so; the videos are well produced and worth watching repeatedly.  My favorite parody (being a Johnny Cash fan and all):

The site is chalked full of well written articles with a humorous splash of sarcasm. Be sure and checkout articles posted on Friday. “Fiction” Friday’s posts are especially creative. The forum has a new layout and is very user friendly. SarcasticGamer.Com now has an audio podcast that is every bit as good as the site and is well produced. They even incorporate their parodies; a very nice touch. The cast runs about 25 minutes which in my opinion is just the right length. (Take a Note TRS!) You can subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or by RSS on their site. So head over to SarcasticGamer.Com and enjoy the experience. If nothing else check out the parodies for a good laugh! I will take us out like Dave…. “Bye”.
