I really hate Experts-Exchange.com. They are always mucking up my Google searches. The internet is place for people to help other people for free (yeah, you can get pr0n there too). Experts-Exchange not only makes you pay for their service, but they also have ads on their pages. WTF?
I paid for Experts-Exchange for 2 years. In those 2 years, I found maybe a couple answers I needed. That’s not worth what I was paying them, so I ditched them. Occasionally, there are some questions that I can only find on Experts-Exchange. Should I sign up for their service again and pay their premium just for a chance that my answer is there? NA! I’ll check it out for FREE! Then, I will share it with everyone else… for FREE! Here’s how:
- In a Google search, type:
“my question that I want answered” site:experts-exchange.com
- When the results appear, find the question you are looking for.
- Instead of clicking the link, click the Cached option.
- Go all the way to the bottom of the page. Scroll all the way down and you will see your answers (IF they have it.)
TADA! Pass that information on and you can be the l33t hax0r in the office.
Oh yeah, Experts-Exchange; Make your service better and cut out the subscription fees. If you don’t know how to make money the ad-supported way, perhaps you are not the “experts” you claim to be.

I love Google. Everything they do is absolutely golden to me. Take Gmail for instance; it rocks and I encourage everyone I meet to use it. This has led to quite a few problems for me, as the first things I hear after I help someone set up their account are:
- Where are my folders?
- Why are my conversations stacked?
- Why are all of my correspondents automatically added to my contacts?
- Forget this, I am going back to my Yahoo account!
The first couple times I heard this, I fluffed it off. Then I realized that this was very common among (almost) everyone I talk to. I love it, my friends love it, and then it hits me! Gmail is really for the geeky people of the world. Everyone else wants, well, Yahoo Mail.
Not long after I figured that out, I wondered why Google is taking so long. Do they have all of their coders working part time as designers? When they sign their grandparents up for Gmail, don’t they listen to their complaints? C’mon guys! If you really want to reach a wider market, you need to make the design a little more user friendly.

I may not be the norm among iPod users but I never leave any music in my iTunes Library. I don’t like to have my PC loaded up with music I can listen to by simply connecting my iPod. While I do have my songs backed up on an external drive, not having your songs in the iTunes library does create a problem if you are wanting to burn or manage your music. After considering buying software to retrieve music from my iPod I came across this article that explained how to easily manage the task. I found the article a little confusing though, as it jumps between Mac and PC instructions, so I have made an instructional video on how to retrieve your tunes. Follow the link to see how!

When you start a new web site, the first thing you want is more traffic. More traffic = more page impressions = more popularity = more advertising money! It’s no surprise that the most questions I receive about starting a web site have to do with gaining more traffic.
The first and most important thing I can tell you is to have dynamite articles. Sure, you might get a popular article on Digg or maybe you even pay for advertising, but what is going to keep that short bust of internet wanderers coming back? Most people on the internet have a short attention span. In fact, I am sure most of you just skimmed this post, didn’t you? You have caught their attention, now show them something that will make them want to return.
The next, and by far, most valuable tool we used to increase page hits would be StumbleUpon. (more…)

I hate SPAM. I am sure everyone does. I have a special hatred for SPAM because I am the senior administrator of a large network (about 1000 users). Almost each one of them have a mailbox. When you have a place to stuff email, you have a place to stuff SPAM. When users get SPAM, they complain to me.
I tried a bunch of anti SPAM packages for Exchange, but nothing seemed to work. I tried commercial products, freeware products, and open source products. They either were too hard to configure, involved too much administrator overhead, or just did not catch SPAM like they should. Then I tried a product that has kept us 95% SPAM free for the past 10 months… (click below for the rest of the story)

I recently stumbled accross pad2pad.com, a site that will build custom circuit boards for you. You design your board using a free software package downloadable from their site. The package even includes and order form so you can order your board right away.

I really wish I had found these guys about two months ago; I had to spend $200 on a new controller unit for my oven, and this site would have saved me about $100!

Happy System Administrator Appreciation Day! If you are a System Administrator (like myself), my hats off to you! If you know of a System Administrator, tell him / her / them how great they are.
System Administrators spend day in and day out making sure you have those digital needs and luxuries. Yet most sys admins spend about 355 days of the year without as much as a simple thanks. They surround themselves with hardware and rarely see other life forms. This keeps them out of the public eye which is good and bad. It’s good because most sys admins I know really don’t care to be around people. It is bad because if you are out of sight, you are usually out of mind. This means that they are not appreciated as much as they deserve.
Check out this site for more information about System Administrator Appreciation Day. Then leave a comment thanking your favorite System Administrator(s). I’ll start it out.
I would like to thank Ben for all the hard work he puts into his job. He does a great job to make sure that everything runs smooth.
I would also like to thank Dan because for the dedication he puts into his work. Great attention to detail!
Being a fellow Sys Admin, I know the sacrifices that need to be made to make life more comfortable for the users. Giving up time from your family and personal life for a long night of server work isn’t always easy. However, I am very thankful to have you on my side. You guys rock and I raise my glass to you. Cheers!

I guess it’s that time again: Time for Google to update the PageRank. All I hear on other blogs or forums is preparing for the update. Links to PageRank prediction engines, tips on increasing your PR, etc. etc…
Some people complain that people are skipping out on writing decent posts just to build links to increase their PR. It’s true, I would like to see the PR on Chatsquatch move up (actually I think we are still in the Google SandBox). However, I am not going to sacrifice quality posts just to build some links. This is going to be an addition to our top-notch articles and posts!
Dean over at DeanHunt.com has a great post about people being obsessed with the Google PageRank. You can read it here. I invite you to check it out and then join in on the list below.
